Electrical is its own world: a lower bond, no state-tracked insurance minimum, but a certified administrator who has to answer for every job. Here is the real structure.
An electrical contractor license runs through L&I's electrical program, separate from the general 18.27 registration. The defining requirement is the electrical administrator: a certified journey-level electrician (or master) assigned to your company who is responsible for supervising all electrical work you perform. You cannot hold the license without one.
The bond here is small — $4,000 — and that lulls people into thinking electrical is the cheap trade to start. The gate is not the bond, it is the administrator. To be your own administrator you need a journey-level certificate (8,000 hours plus 96 classroom hours, exam at 75%) and then two years working as a certified electrician on top of that. If you are not there yet, you are hiring or partnering with someone who is. Budget for that person, not just the filing fees.
An electrical trainee logs hours under supervision — 8,000 hours, roughly four years, plus approved classroom training. A journey-level electrician (01) needs those 8,000 hours plus 96 hours of classroom training and a written exam passed at 75%. To become an administrator you hold a valid journey-level certificate and add two years as a certified electrician. The master electrician path is longer still — around twelve years combined — but you do not need a master to run a shop; a certified administrator is enough.
Be a qualified journey-level electrician yourself, or assign one to the company.
