What It Really Costs to Start a Contractor Business in Washington (2026)

Not the bond amount — the actual money that leaves your account. Here is the honest line-by-line for 2026.

People see “$30,000 bond” and panic. That is coverage, not a bill. What you actually pay to get registered is much smaller and lands in a few buckets.

L&I registration fee$150.20
Bond premium (annual)A fraction of the $30k/$15k face amount
General liability insuranceOngoing premium for $200k/$50k or $250k
Business registration (DOR)Business license application fee
LLC formation (optional)Secretary of State filing, if you form one
Operator note

The bond premium is credit-based. Good credit, a $15,000 specialty bond can be cheap; rough credit or a general $30,000 bond, it costs more. This is one more reason the same financial history that affects a registration can affect what you pay to get bonded. Sort your credit before you shop bonds and you will save real money.

The number that surprises people

The state fee itself — $150.20 — is the small part. Your recurring costs are insurance and the bond premium. Budget for those as ongoing business expenses, not one-time startup costs. Verify the current registration fee on the L&I page before you file.

Trade-specific costs

Plumbing adds a $6,000 bond and $250k insurance; electrical is a $4,000 bond but requires a certified administrator whose time is the real cost. Factor the person, not just the fee.
